Acne scarring can occur as a result of any form of acne spot, although it happens more frequently with moderate to severe acne.
Acne Scarring is caused by the body's reaction to the inflammation brought on by acne: new collagen is generated to treat the wound, forming scar tissue - the scar colour changes happen as a result of the inflammation brought on by acne.
There are several different kinds of acne scars; some may be coloured red, purple, or pinkish as a result of an overproduction of melanin in the skin.Depending on the degree, some scars may heal and eventually disappear. There are three types of scarring: ice pick scars (small deep holes), rolling scars (uneven skin) and boxcar scars (craters in the skin). You can lessen the likelihood of acne scarring by treating your acne while it’s active.
There are several types of acne scarring treatment that we recommend, to stimulate the skin’s natural healing process and encourage cell regeneration and collagen production; depending on the severity of your scarring, we may recommend:
Microneedling: works by penetrating the top layer of skin with tiny needles, stimulating collagen production, and acting as a 'filler' to smooth out the skin around the scars and improve the overall appearance.
Chemical Peels: working beneath your skin’s surface, Chemical Peels help turn over new skin cells and promote new skin cell growth —helping to lessen the appearance of acne scars over time.
Dermaplaning: dramatically reduces the appearance of any acne scars, Dermaplaning works to remove the discolouration and the uneven texture associated with scar tissue.
You need to wait until your acne is not active and your skin is largely clear before starting your treatment for acne scarring.
Some scars may improve slightly on their own depending on the severity, and some scarring will be more difficult to reduce or remove than others without treatment.
Dark spots found on the skin after your acne has cleared (usually red, brown or purple) are very common and aren’t actually acne scars. This is called post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which is much easier to treat than deeper scars and might heal on it’s over time.
Acne scars can be permanent if left untreated — book a consultation today to see what treatment is right for you.
Everyone’s skin is different and no two types of scarring are the same, during your consultation our clinicians will examine your skin and determine the best course of action for you and your concerns. It is essential we wait until your skin is almost clear of acne to begin treatment.
